Night Photography

This blog is about my journey in becoming a good photographer and my hope is to get some feedback and improve my ability to take pictures along the way. At this point I understand the basics of the camera, light and the principles of photography. I have a great deal to learn about the capabilities of the equipment, composition and lighting. Then there are all the things that I don't know that I don't know.

This evening I was messing around with taking photos at night using a tripod. This first shot is our mailbox, I'm thinking it is time to get a new one! Taken at about 10:00 pm with a 1/4 moon lighting the sky, nothing else lighting the shot. Using iPhoto, I bumped the contrast a lot to bring out the blue color. I was satisfied with the sharpness of the handle and the blur of the background.

This is a neighbors tree, and through the center the light is coming from the moon. I don't like how busy the photo is with the palm tree behind the subject. Overall too busy. I thought it was pretty cool I was able to get a decent exposure with no flash.

I tried several times to get the trunk of the tree while capturing the glow of the lights. I am not happy with how grainy this one turned out. ISO was 1000.
